Destiny is a game that I was really looking forward to getting my hands on. The main reason being that the game is being developed by Bungie, the studio behind the Halo franchise. Halo 3 was my first real introduction into legit online gaming; I can’t tell you how many middle school hours I spent grinding in order to reach to Elusive rank of general. The other reason I so look forward to this title is the lack of impressive titles for the next gen consoles. For $400 dollars I had expected for the thing to knock my socks off with awesome and innovative games. Yet, so far all I have gotten was a series of PS3 ports and some not very impressive exclusives. After playing the Destiny Beta, I have to say I am even more excited to play the full version.
The first thing I noticed about this game was the impressive graphics. Realistic is not the right word, because the game features a more cartoony feel, but they are visually stunning and pleasing none the less. This is because the game runs at a 1080p resolution. Unfortunately the game only runs 30fps, as opposed to the 60fps offered by most next gen titles. This because Bungie is also releasing the game for PS3/360 and following a trend that I really can’t stand. Regardless of the frame rate, I did feel like I was getting a truly Next Gen experience exploring around in Destiny.
I also really enjoyed the game play. Destiny expertly marries both a solo and cooperative experience. I shared my Destiny experience with friend and classmate Cole Hray,11. Working together we were able to clear most of what the Beta featured and had a blast doing so. However I was also on my own at times, like when I was scavenging for ammo while fighting off the Fallen or making my shopping rounds at the Tower, the central location in the game. It’s important to note that the game offers a competitive multiplayer mode as well. The mode divides players into two competing teams. Player’s weapons and gear carry over from their single player world. There are a variety of games modes ranging from capturing enemy locations to straight up team death match. The matches are fast paced and very exciting, players will be constantly forced to switch up their strategies to pull out a win.
The beta only allowed testers to reach the rank of 8. I only got to see a small amount of the weapons, gear, and ship parts that would be available to me when the game releases on September 9th. From what I have seen, however, I can say that they are fun to play with. Weapons vary in abilities and stats. You even have special weapons that use rare ammo and deal a great amount of damage. I also enjoyed outfitting my hunter class character in robes and armor of different appearance and strength.
The official release of Destiny is less than a month away, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. It has been to long since I have gotten truly immersed in a multiplayer game, and I have a strong feeling Destiny will be the answer to my prayers.
